How to Brief a Designer: A Simple Guide for Small Business Owners

A design brief is just a document that tells your designer what they need to know before they start. It does not have to be long or formal. It just has to be honest and specific. Designers work with the information they are given, so the more clearly you communicate, the better the results.

Start with your business in plain language. What do you do, who do you do it for, and what problem do you solve? Avoid insider language and write it as if you are explaining to a smart friend who knows nothing about your industry.

Then describe the feeling you want the design to produce. Words like trustworthy, playful, minimal, or bold are useful starting points. Even better, collect three to five examples of design you admire and explain briefly what you like about each. References give a designer something concrete to respond to.

Finally, be clear about what you need and when. List the specific deliverables, the deadline, and any constraints such as brand colors that already exist or file formats required. The more concrete the brief, the faster a studio like Exo Studio can move from conversation to creative work that actually fits.
